Screen.  This includes the size of the screen and whether you want color or black and white will suffice.

Expandable memory: Does the unit come pre-loaded with the charts you want and will you have the fliexibility to add more and other charts.

Reception: Does the unit have WAAS capabilities for the most accurate reception, does it have signal lock to hole the satellite signals in adverse conditions.

Water resistance: how well with the unit stand up to the elements.

Ergonomics: This includes the overall size of the unit and how it fits in your hand and the location and arrangement of the knobs and buttons for easy use.
